Pathology Assistant Forum - Rosalind Franklin Interview: I just interviewed at Rosalind Franklin ...

I just interviewed at Rosalind Franklin and had a totally different experience than the one you have described here. 1st- we had individual interviews where we rotated from faculty member to faculty member. Maybe the group interviews are a thing of the past and you unfortunately applied in a year when they were still doing them. 2nd-the people there are so nice. You can tell they really care about their jobs and their students. You could also tell they were going to be hyper selective about choosing who they let into their program but I don't think that's a bad thing because after all it is their program. The interviews themselves were great. All of the women who interviewed me were professional and definitely people that I could look up to. The guy who interviewed me John seemed like he didn't really care about the interviews cause he asked me what I like to do for fun. I wasn't sure why he didn't ask any difficult questions like the women did. I asked the 1st year students who toured us about faculty involvement in the program and one of them told me that he isn't really involved in the program because he's getting a new job soon so that might be why he didnt put effort into the day. Even with this I hope I get into The Rosalind program. The women faculty and the students made it feel like it was 100% the place for me. A little background on me- I have a great GPA (3.8), have shadowed almost 100 hours & applied to Quinnipiac, Maryland, Duke and Rosalind. I shadowed three Quinnipiac graduates and three Rosalind Franklin graduates. Sadly It seems I will never get an interview at the Quinnipiac program because Im not the right skin color. I just found out they only admit Caucasian and asian students. Im not sure how people let them get away with that but maybe diversity doesn't matter to them either. To be honest I am really thankful that programs like the Rosalind one exist because they have had a lot of diversity in their program. I hope i get in!

Hello! I will be graduating in Dec. with a B.S. in Biology, a minor in chem, and a 3.1 gpa. I am very interested in being a pathologist assistant. I have an interview to intern with a company as a Microbio lab technician for the summer. I am also looking into volunteering and shadowing a PathA for three or four days. I will be taking my GREs in the summer, and the two schools that I would really like to get into are UMD and Drexel. I will be applying to programs in 2016 and I was wondering if anyone had any advice to strengthen my application? I'd also like to hear anyone's personal experience with applying. Thank you!

Hi my name is Phil. I am a long time lurker and first time poster. I have worked as a lab assistant/technician for 4 years and I am currently wrapping up a medical technologist degree at a local college and I am told by the director that I will have a job as soon as I graduate from school (think one year experience as a med tech). I have also worked some in histology microtoming, embedding, and assisting in grossing/frozen sections. I have shadowed two pathology assistants for around 20-30 hours so far and really enjoy what they do. My undergraduate degree was in high school science education (I taught Anatomy and physiology). I am currently 24 years old. My question is what are my chances of getting into the Indianapolis school. I understand they only accept 4-5 students a year. I have a 3.9 gpa and have made straight A's in all of my science classes. Orgo I through AnP to hematology. I have yet to take the GRE but I assume I will score average to above average. I interview well and I am competent in proper laboratory procedure, protocol, and "how things generally work" in the lab.

Just trying to start up a conversation of this years applicants since a lot of the program's applications have started to open up! There isn't a lot of resources out there for pathologists' assistant programs and I thought it would be nice to have a sense of community and not feel all alone during this process! Let's make this a resourceful thread for this year's and future year's applicants! A little about me: I'm a non trad applicant who returned to school after many years off(to find myself and explore careers) to finish my bachelors. I'm a senior this year and I will be graduating with a B.S. in biology with a minor in chemistry. I know a lot of applicants do not come straight from undergrad so this process is a little daunting!

I've just discovered this and I'm EXTREMELY interested in applying to these path a programs. However, job offers on indeed, monster, etc. are VERY scarce. I want to be able to have a job when I graduate and I don't want to have to move across the country. I am fine with moving to a neighboring state, but not across the world. I love my family and I don't want to leave them. (For reference, I am in Michigan.) Problem is, no one seems to know about this sort of thing! How do I go about finding answers to my questions!
There was a lot to like. I like the urban environment of Philadelphia and the resources available, the rotation sites look great, there's a dorm right next door to the main class building where students can stay (especially the first semester, which is the hardest, and negates the need to drive down and apartment hunt before school starts), the program directors definitely seem to know what they're doing, the students had good things to say for the most part and seem confident about the job search, facilities are nice. In terms of cost Drexel is around the middle of the road comparatively, not too bad. Finally, both the program directors and students were very honest with me about all aspects of the program and my questions, no spinning or downplaying or anything like that, which was refreshing. In terms of dislikes...not much stood out that is likely very different elsewhere. It was made clear that the first semester (summer) is very grueling with a lot of studying required. Any outside distractions/personal issues will be a problem. For the rotations, they are very intense with 54 straight weeks, no breaks (except holidays and maybe a few days if you ask), with tests, and there isn't really any choice in terms of where you rotate when. There was one professor some of the students weren't thrilled about, and some also grumbled about wanting to move the laboratory management course to later in the curriculum. However, this is all stuff that to me is either true at all of the schools or relatively minor in the grand scheme of things. Overall, the students seemed pleased with the program and I came away impressed. Really hope I get an acceptance...
Thanks! That's great to know. A lot of the grumbles about amount of classes and stuff is probably just due to the difference in amount of work expected compared to undergrad. Glad you liked it! Keep us posted!

Pathology Assistant Forum - Interested in Wayne State's PA program; Do I have a chance?: Hi everyone. This is my first time posti...

Hi everyone. This is my first time posting here. I am a fourth year student at Wayne State University with a BS in Biological Sciences in progress. When I started out in college I didn't know what I wanted to do. I just knew I wanted to do something related to biology, but I didn't think I wanted to go into anything medical related. I focused more on research and academics and also explored my interest in the ecological and encironmental sciences. So up to this point I have lab experience/research and field work dealing with ecology and some lab experience in molecular biology. My GPA is 3.91 as of now. Only recently have I decided that I want to pursue a career as a Pathologists Assistant. Really long story short, I found out about the field relatively recently, and after reading about it and researching, I discovered that it would be the perfect fit for me if I could get into a program. So, now I'm trying to play catch-up. I don't have any experience in healthcare related fields. However, soon I'll be starting volunteer work at the John Dingell VA Medical Center. I've read that volunteer work in a pathology lab is recommended/preferred. Is this type of volunteer work easy to find? Is this different than shadowing? And would I still have some chance of getting into Wayne State's program if I couldn't find this type of volunteer work? Also, speaking of shadowing, I've been very interested in finding a PA either close to Wayne State's campus or around the Sterling Heights/Troy Michigan area. Is there anyone available in these areas to let me shadow them? I'm so worried that I won't be able to make myself competitive enough. I want this so badly! I wish I would have know about this field as a freshman...Do I have any chance at all?

I am thinking about applying to several PA programs once I finish my bachelors degree and was wondering what the chances are of being accepted to one in a different state? There are currently no programs in Kentucky and I have seen in some other fields(such as some medical schools)that they will give preference to those that are residents of the state and anyone else must be amazing to even have a chance. Is this how pathology assistant programs are as well?

Pathology Assistant Forum - PA Programs: Clinical Rotations: I am currently living in Texas, pursuing...

I am currently living in Texas, pursuing my undergraduate degree. I plan to apply to several Pathologists' Assistant programs once I'm closer to graduating. I was reading up on some blog posts of Pathologists' Assistant students about the 2nd year's curriculum, clinical rotations. It appears that each rotation is only 3-6 weeks long and a lot of moving is involved over the course of the year. I was wondering about the logistics of renting an apartment for a month at a time (if leases that short are even possible) before moving to the next clinical rotation in a different city or state. How is this typically handled by 2nd year PA students? If I apply to PathA programs and get accepted, my husband and I would move to the city of that university and he would find a job while I attend the program. I'm wondering how practical it is for him to stay in that city, living in an apartment and working, while I'm jumping from location to location over the course of the second year. Living arrangements and finances seem like they would be a big issue during the 2nd half of the program. My main question is: do all of the programs send their students to affiliated locations across the country, or do some programs keep the clinical rotations local? Any input or advice is appreciated.

Hi all, I just applied to RSU and Quinnipiac's Pathologists' Assistant program and planning to apply to WVU shortly (once I take my GRE, all the other accredited universities will follow). My question or concern really is how strong my application is. I would appreciate if someone could weigh and let me know if I have a shot or what i can do to strengthen my application. My facts below: - I have a one degree from 10+ years ago (not in Biology). I went back to school to get my prerequisites and my overall GPA is 3.59. I got B+ in A&P1, and A in A&P and everything else is either B+/A range. - I have only 13 hours shadowing. I couldn't get more because there aren't many pathA's available to shadow. I'm worried this isn't enough. - I have never volunteered or worked in the medical field. Thoughts?
